No Power in My Home? Why You Have Half Power or No Power at All

Waking up to a dark house is frustrating. But what is even more baffling is when half of your home has power and the other half does not. The lights are on in the living room, but the kitchen outlets have no power. The ceiling fan works, but the A/C breaker trips as soon as you turn it on.

If you are experiencing a complete loss of power or half power in your house, do not panic. This guide will walk you through the common causes—from a simple tripped GFCI to a serious utility-side failure—and tell you exactly when to call FPL versus when to call a licensed electrician.

Complete Loss of Power (No Power in My Home)

When absolutely nothing in your home works, the issue is usually upstream of your
internal wiring. Here are the most likely culprits:

1. A Wide-Scale Power Outage

Before you do anything else, check if your neighbors have power. If the entire block is dark, the utility company (FPL) has an outage in your area.
What to do: Check FPL’s outage map on your phone or call their automated line. Wait for their estimated restoration time.

2. The Main Breaker Has Tripped

Your main breaker is the large switch at the top of your electrical panel. It controls all the power entering your home. If it trips, your entire house goes dark.
Why it happens: A sudden power surge from a lightning strike, a severe overload, or an internal short circuit can knock it offline.
What to do: Open your panel. Turn the main breaker firmly to the OFF position, then push it firmly back ON. If it stays on, you are good. If it trips again instantly, you have a serious internal short and need a professional immediately.

3. FPL Said the Meter Is Damaged

Sometimes, the issue is outside your four walls. Weather, corrosion, or simple wear-and-tear can damage the utility meter on the side of your house. If FPL came out
and told you that the meter is damaged, they will usually require a licensed electrician to repair the meter base or the service entrance cable before they will reconnect power.

Half Power in My House (The "Lost Leg" Problem)

If roughly half of your lights, receptacles, and 120V appliances are working while the other half are dea —or if your 240V appliances (like your electric oven, dryer, or A/C) are not working at all—you are dealing with a "lost leg" or "dropped phase."

Why Does This Happen?

Homes in the U.S. receive 240 volts of power from the utility pole. This power is split into two 120-volt "legs" (or phases) that enter your main breaker panel.

  • Leg A powers half of your 120V circuits (living room, some bedrooms).
  • Leg B powers the other half (kitchen, bathrooms, garage).
  • Both legs together power your heavy 240V appliances (AC compressor, oven,
  • dryer).

If one of those legs breaks or becomes loose somewhere between the utility pole and your main breaker, you lose half your house. This is a classic half power in my house scenario.

Common Causes of a Lost Leg

  • Severe weather (storms, hurricanes, falling tree limbs) damaging the service drop outside.
  • Loose connections at the utility transformer or the meter base.
  • Corrosion in the main breaker or meter socket.
  • FPL said the main breaker is bad – a faulty main breaker can fail to pass power through one leg.

Is It a Breaker or a GFCI?

Before you assume the worst, let us check the simple things first. Sometimes, what
feels like a major outage is just a localized tripped device.

Check Every GFCI Outlet

A single GFCI outlet (usually in your bathroom, kitchen, garage, or outside) can control multiple "downstream" outlets. If it trips, it can kill power to an entire section of your home—making it seem like you have a massive problem.

What to do: Walk through your house and press the RESET button on every GFCI outlet you can find. If one clicks back in and your kitchen outlets suddenly have power, you have solved the problem.

Check Every Breaker (Visually)

A tripped breaker might not look tripped. Many breakers only move to a "middle" position that is hard to see at a glance.
What to do: Turn every single breaker in your panel fully OFF and then firmly back ON—including the main breaker. This resets the internal mechanism and often restores power.

When to Call FPL vs. When to Call an Electrician

This is the most critical decision you will make. Calling the wrong party wastes time.

Call FPL (Your Utility Company) If:

  • Your neighbors are also out of power.
  • You see damaged wires hanging from the utility pole to your house (the service drop).
  • You have verified your main breaker is ON but have half power or no power—this usually means the issue is on their side of the meter.
  • Note: FPL will fix the line to your meter, but they will not touch your interior panel or wiring.

Call a Licensed Electrician If:

  • FPL told you the meter is damaged and you need the meter base repaired.
  • FPL told you the main breaker is bad and it needs replacement.
  • You reset the main breaker and it immediately trips again (short circuit).
  • You see burning smells, scorch marks, or heat coming from the panel.
  • You have an outdated Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel that needs replacement.
  • You need a breaker panel inspection to determine why your A/C breaker trips repeatedly.
  • You have a double tap wire in the panel or DIY exposed wiring that is causing a fault.
